I used to live in North Woolwich – Gallions Point. Moored on the Thames, very close, is a ship that gave me the creeps. It was so ugly. I mention it in my non-fiction Caffeinated in Woolwich.
It was originally a Swedish ferry, roll on roll off, called: Olandssund III built in 1960. It was bought by Western Ferries and renamed MV Sound of Scarba to run across the Firth of Clyde. They sold it in 2001. Then it was towed down the UK, fitted with a load of glass, and stuck on a mooring on the Thames to haunt me.
Originally they wanted to run it up and down the Thames as a commuter ship, like the Thames Clippers, a relaxed ride home. Relaxed indeed, as it would take ages, a max speed of about 10 knots. The clippers do about 30 knots! They seemed to give up on that, goodness know what they will do with it, if anything. It’s now called “MV Sound”
